Chapter 16

Sherry turned to Pep and Angel. “That paper I found on my second trip up to the attic has me curious,” she said. She pulled the paper from her pocket and unfolded it. “Do you have any idea yet what the subject of this drawing is? Dad, does this mean anything to you?”

All three of them cozied up beside Sherry to get a better look.

“Maybe notes from the workmen?” Pep suggested. “It could be a diagram of the ductwork trail.”

“That’s curious,” Erno said. “Maybe . . .”

Sherry waited for him to continue, but he didn’t go on, merely stared off into the distance. She flipped the paper over.

“The triskele symbol,” Angel said.

“I didn’t know the name for that symbol. I know I’ve seen it before somewhere,” Sherry said.

Angel closed his eyes for a moment. “Cara wore a chain around her neck with a triskele charm dangling from it.”

“That’s it. That’s where I’ve seen the design,” Sherry said with astonishment in her voice. “Does anyone know what the triskele symbol signifies?”

Before Angel could answer, Erno coughed lightly. “I think this is all beyond me,” he said. “I’ll leave it up to you three to sort out the mysterious symbol.”

After they had said their goodbyes and Erno had left, Angel picked up where he’d left off. “Cara told me she’s been wearing the charm for years. In Ireland the symbol has a few meanings all based on the importance of the number three.” Angel pointed to the three spirals that met in the middle. “Cara explained that the three spirals stood for the physical, celestial and spiritual worlds. The power of three. Her emphasis was on the spiritual world. No surprise there. She believed good and bad come in threes.”

Sherry turned the paper over. “What do you see on this side now that the other side is identified as the triskele symbol?”

Angel took a hard look at the markings.

“Does the drawing or scribble have any association with the symbol as far as you can tell?”

“Tough to say. Could be a nonsense doodle or something with deeper meaning.”

Sherry studied the paper in silence.

“Your wheels are turning,” Pep said as he tapped his forehead. “What’s on your mind?”

“The Wanner kids said Cara was the source of the haunting rumor. I was up in the attic and, if I didn’t know any better, I’d have reason to believe the room was haunted. Someone or something gave me a very unwelcome greeting up there.”

“Pookas?” Angel asked. “Any sign of pookas?”

“I wouldn’t know one if I saw one,” Sherry said. “What’s a pooka?”

“I’m not sure anyone would. They can take any shape they want, loving to assume the identity of an animal or human. Their game is to trick humans. Some insist there’s no malice intended, only fun on their terms, which doesn’t always translate to fun for everyone,” Angel said. “I do know you want to keep them happy or they’ll become mischievous, and not in a fun way.”

“Case in point. My sore ankle,” Sherry said.
